When he was seven years old, Luffy made friends with Red-Haired Shanks and his crew of pirates. The Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum Gum Fruit), a mythical Devil Fruit that turned Luffy's body into rubber at the cost of robbing him of his swimming ability, was accidentally consumed by Luffy during a dispute between Shanks and a bandit.
After fighting off the bandit, Luffy is quickly defeated and taken hostage, but Shanks arrives to save him despite having his arm bit off by a sea monster while attempting to save Luffy from drowning. Luffy made a promise to Shanks that he would surpass him and become king of the pirates by discovering the legendary treasure known as the One Piece when Shanks eventually left the island where he lived. Roronoa Zoro, the first member of the Straw Hats' crew and Luffy's second friend at sea, used to go after pirates as a bounty hunter. Due to his steadfast loyalty to Luffy, he has emerged as one of the crew members who can be counted on the most. They greatly respect and admire each other despite the fact that they occasionally disagree. Out of all the crew members, Zoro and Luffy have the strongest apparent "brothers in arms" bond. The second person to join Luffy's crew is Nami, who was formerly a member of the Arlong Pirates. She and Luffy are among the Straw Hats' closest friends, and their reliance on one another is mutual. Luffy relies on Nami as his navigator and for daily tasks, and Nami looks to Luffy for support during tense and dangerous situations. Due to Nami becoming irritated by Luffy's antics and stupidity and Luffy becoming irritated at Nami for being overbearing and ruining his fun, the two are frequently seen arguing.

Usopp, the former captain of the "Usopp Pirates," joined Luffy's crew as the third person. They behave as best friends and have a strong brotherly bond. Usopp is weak and cowardly, but Luffy values him as a crew member and does not disparage him for either. Luffy was upset when he had to expel Usopp and ecstatic when he came back. They frequently act foolishly on board the ship, and the two are known as the crew's dimwits. Usopp is deeply concerned about Luffy's desire for perilous adventures, just like Nami and Chopper.

Sanji, the fourth person to join the Straw Hats, was formerly the Baratie's cook. He is probably Luffy's favorite crew member due to his amazing cooking abilities, which satisfy Luffy's gluttonous nature. He has a stronger dislike for Luffy than most people do because of his recklessness and stupidity, but he still holds him in high regard and values him as both his captain and a friend. He was thrilled to be back with the crew, as was Luffy, who was looking forward to him cooking once more. He had been in tears from having to fight Luffy after he had left the crew.

He is the fifth person to join the Straw Hats, the crew's doctor, and the first person to consume Devil Fruit. He is very impressed by Luffy because he is the crew's youngest member, and despite his innocence, he participates in his silly antics. He admires Luffy as his captain and they have a great deal of respect for one another. He only questions Luffy when he is in danger of hurting himself or when he disobeys medical advice. He admires Luffy because he accepts him for who he is, whereas almost everyone else views him as a monster.

Nico Robin, a former Baroque Works agent and Crocodile's right-hand woman, joined Luffy's crew as the sixth person and the second Devil Fruit user. He has a completely healthy relationship with Robin out of all the members of his crew because the two get along so well and have never been seen fighting. She re-joined the Straw Hats after the Enies Lobby Arc, and since then, she has remained Luffy's dependable and loyal friend. She interprets the Poneglyphs for the Straw Hats as their archaeologist.

The seventh member of the Straw Hats and former head of the Franky Family, Franky is the crew's shipwright. He is in charge of constructing the Thousand Sunny, their new ship. He and Luffy get along incredibly well and have a strong relationship. Franky enjoys amusing his captain with his many inventions and robotic body, acting as a sort of older brother to him. He has a great deal of faith in Luffy's skills, respects him as the captain, and is very fond of him. Franky's cyborg body frequently astounds Luffy, who also finds him to be very entertaining. He has complete faith in his abilities as a fighter and a shipwright.
VI. Monkey D Luffy Personality
The three characteristics that define Luffy the most are his complete lack of fear, unwavering self-confidence, and apparent lack of common sense. He typically follows his own agenda and avoids engaging in delicate or nuanced conversation. Despite this, Luffy has a talent for seeing right to the core of a situation and is frequently able to accurately point out a person's character flaws, such as Koby's cowardice or Kuro's weakness as a pirate. He constantly declares his intention to rule as the Pirate King and puts his entire being into doing so. He is incredibly ambitious.
Being impulsive and childlike, Luffy's personality can be compared to that of a child. He can be incredibly avaricious, especially when it comes to food, his crew, and adventures, or incredibly selfless, going to such extremes as to sacrifice himself in order to exact revenge or defend his friends, crew, and family. He frequently identifies the core of the issue and determines the most straightforward approach to solving it, despite his childish outlook.
Luffy's personality has been greatly impacted by Shanks, as he was previously conceited, impatient, and very proud of himself. The young boy was furious at the thought of Shanks being humiliated by Higuma, and he recklessly tried to exact his vengeance. After meeting Shanks and being motivated to become the Pirate King by him, Luffy eventually matures to resemble him by choosing to be more composed, patient, and resistant to being affected by his circumstances. In the beginning, he would occasionally quote Shanks to others, such as when they first met Usopp. Having said that, Luffy is distinctly his own person and, in general, is distinct from Shanks. Though his tendency to lose his temper and become enraged has significantly lessened since the timeskip, he still does so occasionally.
Luffy detests weak people above all else, though not necessarily in a physical sense. He has openly admitted to Koby that he "hates people like him" because of the cowardly traits and frequent use of the phrase "it's impossible." On the other hand, he admires people who work hard to overcome their limitations and has grown to like Koby as a result of witnessing him risk his life. He criticizes Kuro for whining about living as a pirate, focusing less on his crimes and more on his desire to leave the life of piracy.
VII. Monkey D Luffy’s Strength
1. Monkey D Luffy Power & Abilities
-
Gum Gum Fruit: Devil Fruit of the Paramecia variety, which Luffy consumed. After consuming the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum Gum Fruit), Luffy's entire body was transformed into rubber, enabling him to freely stretch and contort his body. Being made of rubber, Luffy can bounce projectiles like bullets and cannonballs back at the person who fired them and most blunt force attacks simply bounce off of his body. He is also unaffected by electricity.
-
Haki: A unique ability that only a select few possess. Haki comes in three different varieties. Kenbunshoku Haki, which enables Luffy to sense the presence of people and anticipate their attacks; Busoshoku Haki, which fortifies parts of his body to increase their striking power or forms an invisible shield around him to deflect blows; and Haoshoku Haki, which exerts his will over the environment to subdue weak-willed individuals and exert pressure on the surrounding area.
-
Superhuman Strength: Luffy possesses extraordinary strength. He has the strength to knock out a sea monster with a single blow, toss a massive golden ball around, shatter steel, bring down buildings, split bedrock, launch enormous monsters hundreds of feet, and even break the mountain-sized Pica's head with ease.
-
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Luffy has superhuman speed and reflexes, enabling him to react to gunfire and cannonballs, avoid direct explosions, and move more quickly than the human eye can follow.
-
Superhuman Durability and Stamina: Luffy has superhuman stamina and durability thanks to his rubber body. He is resilient enough to withstand punches that split islands in half, explosions, freezing to death, and knocking through buildings.
-
Superhuman Agility and Endurance.
2. Monkey D Luffy Alternate Forms
-
Second Gear: The Second Gear stretches and thins out Luffy's blood vessels, accelerating blood flow throughout his body. His body receives more nutrients as a result, giving him an increase in speed and strength. In this condition, Luffy was able to outrun Rob Lucci, speed-blitz Blueno, and even respond to laser beams. Luffy can easily activate this for a quick attack after the time skip and easily deactivate it. This coupled with the hardening power of Busoshoku Haki allows Luffy's attacks to cause friction that can set his body on fire. When this wears off, Luffy starts to get ravenous.
-
Third Gear: The second of Luffy's gears, Third Gear requires him to bite into and blow into his thumb, inflating it until it is enormous. Luffy's arm has significantly more power in its new giant state, enabling him to easily destroy large ships and buildings with a single blow. He has the ability to move the air around his body, enlarging various body parts in the process.
-
Fourth Gear: Bounceman : Bounceman, Luffy's third and currently strongest gear, is the fourth gear. Luffy can inflate his muscular structure to significantly increase the size of his upper body by hardening his upper body with Busoshoku Haki, biting into his forearm, and blowing into it. Luffy's strength, speed, and durability are so enhanced in this form that regular attacks simply miss him. Fourth Gear emphasizes compressing Luffy's limbs before releasing them for more power at the expense of range rather than stretching them.
-
Fourth Gear: Tankman: After eating a lot of food, which makes his torso greatly enlarge and become rounder, Luffy uses a variation of Fourth Gear called Tankman. In this form, Luffy's durability has significantly improved, enabling him to easily parry blows that would otherwise pierce Bounceman's skin. He can also use his stomach as a launcher to amp up Bounceman's compression attacks.
-
Fourth Gear: Snakeman: A significantly more streamlined version of Fourth Gear than Bounceman. While Snakeman gains the advantage of making his attack continuously accelerate with each redirection, Bounceman's ability to instantly reroute his attacks remains intact. This form enables Luffy to transform his punches into semi-homing attacks and is primarily used against opponents who are skilled at dodging attacks. It is used in conjunction with his Kenbunshoku Haki. Attacks don't bounce off of Luffy in this form as they do with the other Fourth Gear variants, and it has less defense than Bounceman and Tankman.
