The sociology of Europe may be an evolving and diverging field. Typically a perceptive and important topic that identifies and characterizes contemporary problems and locks in with key social hypothetical points of view, offering an informed analysis of European society.

EU Institutions: Who does what?

  • Court of Justice of the European Union (CURIA)
    The Court of Justice of the European Union reviews the legality of the acts of the institutions of the European Union, ensures that the Member States comply with obligations under the Treaties, and interprets European Union law at the request of the national courts and tribunals. The Court constitutes the judicial authority of the European Union and, in cooperation with the courts and tribunals of the Member States, it ensures the uniform application and interpretation of European Union law.
  • European Central Bank (ECB)
    The ECB is the central bank for Europe’s single currency, the euro. Its main task is to maintain the euro’s purchasing power and price stability in the euro area. The euro area comprises the 19 European Union countries that have introduced the euro since 1999.   • European Commission (EC)
    The European Commission represents the general interest of the EU and is the driving force in proposing legislation (to Parliament and the Council), administering and implementing EU policies, enforcing EU law (jointly with the Court of Justice) and negotiating in the international arena. The Commission is divided into several departments and services. The departments are known as Directorate-Generals (DGs).
  • European Council 
    The European Council is the EU institution that defines the general political direction and priorities of the European Union. It consists of the heads of state or government of the member states, together with its President and the President of the Commission. The European Council has no formal legislative power, it is a strategic and crisis-solving body that provides the union with general political directions and priorities, and acts as a collective presidency.
  • European Parliament (EP) 
    The European Parliament (EP) is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union (EU). Together with the Council of the European Union (the Council) and the European Commission, it exercises the legislative function of the EU. The Parliament acts as a co-legislator, sharing with the Council the power to adopt and amend legislative proposals and to decide on the EU budget. It also supervises the work of the Commission and other EU bodies and cooperates with national parliaments of EU countries to get their input.
  • European University Institute (EUI) - Florence, Italy 
    An international postgraduate and post-doctoral teaching and research institute established by European Union member states to contribute to cultural and scientific development in the social sciences, in a European perspective.
  • Eurostat - Luxembourg 
    Statistical Office of the European Communities provides statistical information to the institutions of the European Union and to promote the harmonisation of statistical methods across its member states and candidates for accession as well as EFTA countries.

  • AEGEE - Association des Etats Généraux des Etudiants de l’Europe / European Students’ Forum 
    One of Europe’s biggest interdisciplinary student organisations, striving for a democratic, diverse and borderless Europe. As a non-governmental, politically independent, and non-profit organisation AEGEE is open to students and young people from all faculties and disciplines. The office of AEGEE is located in Brussels, Belgium.
  • ARENA Centre for European Studies - University of Oslo, Norway
    Advanced research on the Europeanisation of the nation-state. Arena is a research program on the changes in Europe with a primary focus on the role of the nation-state. The main goal is to strengthen the research on European matters by building coordinated academic networks across different research approaches. The research within ARENA seeks to describe, analyze and evaluate the change process in Europe. It’s a programme under the auspices of The Research Council of Norway and is organized with a coordinating unit, SentralARENA at The University of Oslo.
  • Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies - Free University, Berlin, Germany
    Promotes a new generation of young North American scholars with specialized knowledge of modern and contemporary Germany and Europe. The program supports scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-18th century. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research as well as postdoctoral research which leads to completion of a monograph.
  • Centre for European Economic Research / Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW) - Mannheim, Germany
    A non-profit and independent institute founded in 1990 on the basis of a public-private initiative in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg in co-operation with the University of Mannheim, ZEW is one of Germany’s leading economic research institutes, and enjoys a strong reputation throughout Europe. The institute addresses on decision-makers in politics, business, and administration, scientists in the national and international arena as well as the interested public. Frequent surveys on the situation on the financial markets and the business situation of the information economy as well as the large-scale annual study on innovation activities in the German economy are representative for the different types of information provided by ZEW.
  • Centre for European Governance (CEG) - University of Exeter, UK
    CEG has a collaborative and research-led approach to studying European Governance and is internationally renowned for interdisciplinary research and post-graduate specialised training. It promotes inter-disciplinary research on the European Union and Europeanization processes and provides specialist training in the areas of EU politics, constitutional theory, history of ideas, regulatory governance, public opinion, constitutional politics, and the political economy of European integration.

  • European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA)  - Maastricht, Netherlands
    An independent training institute focussing on all aspects of European Integration. EIPA organizes seminars and conferences on current aspects of the EU.
  • European Journalism Centre (EJC) - Maastricht, Netherlands  - Maastricht, Netherlands
    An independent, international, non-profit foundation dedicated to the highest standards in journalism, through the further training of journalists and media professionals. Building on its extensive international network, the EJC operates as a facilitator and partner in a wide variety of journalism related projects.
  • European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) - Copenhagen, Denmark
    ELSA is an independent, non-political, non-profit organisation of law students and young lawyers. It has a consultative status with UNESCO.

    The executive body of the European Patent Organisation (EPOg). The examiners of EPO are in charge of studying European patent applications, filed by applicants, in order to decide whether to grant a patent for an invention.

    A European Network of experts working for the European Commission. They carry out research and develop actions on how to reach a balanced participation of women and men in decision-making.   • Eurostars Programma - Research Council of Norway
    A joint programme between the EUREKA network and the European Commission that is specifically targeted towards research-intensive SMEs. The programme provides support for SMEs conducting R&D; to develop new products, processes or services.
  • Joint Research Centre (JRC) - Science Hub
    Provides customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. The JRC has a unique combination of facilities and expertise transcending national boundaries. Moreover, through its networks it stimulates collaborative research and broadens its knowledge.
